SPACEPOL at GIS MOMM 2025 Urban Circulations between Capitals of the Middle East and Central Asia

We’re thrilled to announce that the SpacePol team will be present at the upcoming 6th Congress of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies (GIS MOMM), held at the University of Strasbourg from 25–27 June 2025.

As part of the event, our collaborators will participate in the panel:

🧭 “Acteurs urbains en circulation entre les capitales du Moyen-Orient et d’Asie centrale”
📍 Friday 27 June, 8h30–10h30 – Room 3215
🔎 Organised by Roman Stadnicki (Université de Tours, CITERES-EMAM)

This workshop brings together researchers working on the flows of actors, capital, and architectural ideas shaping the urban fabric of key capital cities across Central Asia and the Middle East. The session reflects a core concern of the SpacePol project: the geopolitical entanglements and symbolic economies that underpin urban development in capital cities of the non-Western world.

🎙️ Presentations include:

  • Gülçin Erdi (CNRS–IFEA)
Real estate as a source of influence diplomacy: Turkish companies in urban projects in Kazakhstan
  • Paul Wolkenstein (INALCO, CREE)
Large post-Soviet buildings financed by Turkey in Central Asia: Between revivalist and neo-futurist urban narratives
  • Jeanne Gorin (Université Paris 8, Cresppa-Labtop, CEDEJ)
Real estate developers and Gulf countries in Egypt’s new administrative capital
  • Julien Thorez (CNRS, CeRMI) & Roman Stadnicki (Université de Tours, CITERES-EMAM)
From project to developer: Abu Dhabi Plaza (Astana) by Aldar (Abu Dhabi)

This panel illustrates how urban development serves as a powerful medium of geopolitical ambition, symbolic projection, and commercial strategy. From Turkish diplomatic investments in Kazakhstan, to Gulf-funded megaprojects in Egypt and Central Asia, we explore how urban projects transcend national borders and reflect broader regional dynamics.

🚩 Stay tuned as we continue to follow the flows of space and power in capital cities.
